Over three exhausting years, she endures poisonings, plane failures, and severe fractures to keep him breathing, only for Ethan's devious paramour to take credit for every rescue. Convinced Serena is a manipulative stalker engineering accidents for attention, Ethan treats her with relentless verbal cruelty.

Upon throwing herself in front of a runaway semi-truck to complete her hundredth mission, Serena's devotion finally expires. Discharging herself from the trauma unit, she severs all ties with the household and relocates to the Swiss Alps to restore her family's heritage.
