Story

William is nine years old and remembers a life before this one, one he is trying to make right. When a neighbor dies and the adults around him accept the obvious answer, he starts asking questions nobody thought to ask, and the case cracks open into something much larger than one death.

His deductions get him noticed by the Major Crimes Unit, who bring him onto the notorious 1213 case despite every reason to send him home. He walks them through evidence they had already dismissed. Then someone accuses him anonymously, and the same department that needed his mind has to decide whether to stand behind a child or bury him to save face.
